How to Apply

Graduate admissions at Carnegie Mellon are handled at the department level. A complete application should include all of the following:

Applications are due January 15 for Fall 2009.

Applications are reviewed on a continuous basis beginning in November. Applications received later will be considered as time permits.

Applications for Spring are due on October 15.

  1. A complete application formonline application (strongly preferred for fastest review) or fill out and send the paper application (36K PDF file available if you cannot use the online application). Please apply only once. Do not send a paper application after applying online!
  2. A 1-2 page statement of purpose outlining your research interests and how you hope to pursue those interests at Carnegie Mellon. You will upload your statement of purpose file when you fill out the online application.
  3. Three letters of reference (26K PDF file).
  4. Transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work.
  5. Tests
    • Graduate Records Examination (GRE) General and Subject test scores — official copies sent directly from the College Board are required for admission. CODES: Institution 2074, Department 0301
    • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Test of Spoken English (TSE) is required for students whose undergraduate work was not in English. An official score report should follow in order for your application to receive consideration. CODES: Institution 2074, Department 62
